Why WebP
WebP holds the same picture in far fewer bytes than PNG: often a fifth of the weight at a quality the eye cannot tell apart. It keeps transparency, soft edges included, and every current browser shows it.
Set the quality to taste. 90% is hard to tell from the PNG; 75% suits most pictures on a page.
Which browsers can make it
Writing WebP is the browser’s own work here. Chrome, Edge and Firefox do it. Safari does not, on a Mac or in any browser on an iPhone or iPad: there, this page says so and offers the formats Safari writes.
