Canada has three kinds of sales tax. The federal GST of 5% applies everywhere. Five provinces fold it into a single harmonized sales tax (HST). Four others charge a provincial tax beside the GST: the PST in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, the RST in Manitoba and the QST in Québec. Alberta and the three territories charge the GST alone.
How the total is calculated
Every provincial tax in Canada is calculated on the price before the GST: none is charged on top of another. The calculator works out each tax on the price, rounds it to the cent as an invoice does, and adds them up.
Working back from a price with taxes in, each tax is its share of the total: in Ontario the HST is 13 ÷ 113 of it, in British Columbia the GST is 5 ÷ 112 and the PST 7 ÷ 112. What remains is the price before taxes.
Which province’s rate applies
As a rule the rate is that of the place where the goods are delivered or the service is used, not where the seller is. A shop in Ontario shipping to Halifax charges Nova Scotia’s HST. The place-of-supply rules have exceptions, and some goods and services are zero-rated or exempt: the Canada Revenue Agency and each province’s revenue agency are the reference.
