How a discount is calculated
A discount in percent takes that share of the price off: 25% off $80 is $20 off, so you pay $60. A discount in dollars is simply subtracted.
Two discounts are not added
When a sale stacks, an extra 10% at the till on top of 20% off, the second discount is taken on the price the first one left. 20% then 10% is 28% off, not 30%. The calculator shows the combined percentage, so a stacked offer can be compared with a single one.
The order does not change the result: 10% then 20% is also 28%.
Before tax, after tax
In Canada a price is usually shown before sales tax, and the discount applies to that price; the tax is then charged on what remains. To add it, take the sale price to the GST and QST calculator, or to the Canadian sales tax calculator for another province.
