The five formulas

X% of Y = Y × X ÷ 100X is what % of Y = X ÷ Y × 100Change from X to Y = (Y − X) ÷ X × 100X raised by Y% = X × (1 + Y ÷ 100)X is Y% of what = X ÷ (Y ÷ 100)

A percentage is a fraction of one hundred, nothing more. Every question about percentages is one of these five, asked forwards or backwards.

Percent and percentage points

A rate that goes from 10% to 15% has risen by 5 percentage points, and by 50 percent: 5 is half of 10. The two are often confused, and the difference is large. When the figures being compared are themselves percentages, say which one you mean.

A percentage does not undo itself

Take 20% off 100 and you have 80. Add 20% back and you have 96, not 100, because the second 20% is taken on a smaller number. To return to the start after a drop of 20% you need a rise of 25%. The last line of the calculator answers that kind of question: 80 is 80% of what?

Pricing a product? The margin and markup calculator works on the same principle.
