Which format to choose
| Format | Best for | Transparency | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Photographs | No | Light; loses a little at each save |
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, drawings | Yes | Exact; heavy for photographs |
| WebP | The web, photos and graphics alike | Yes | Lighter than both at the same look |
What it reads and writes
It opens JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, SVG, BMP and ICO files. It saves JPG and PNG in every browser, WebP in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and AVIF in Safari. That list is your browser’s own: no picture is sent to a server to be converted.
An animated GIF gives its first frame. HEIC photos from an iPhone open only in Safari; elsewhere, export them as JPG from the Photos app first.
What changes, and what does not
- The size in pixels stays the same, unless you set a width.
- A photo keeps the way up its camera recorded.
- What the camera wrote into the file (the place, the date, the device) is left out of the new one.
- Converting a JPG to PNG does not bring back what JPG discarded; it only stops the loss there.
To make pictures lighter rather than change their format, use the image compressor.
