How each format is made lighter
- JPG and WebP are written again at the quality you set. Most of a photo’s weight is detail the eye does not find; 70 to 80% removes it.
- PNG is reduced to the 256 colours that matter most and written with a palette. A screenshot or a drawing often loses half to three quarters of its weight, and keeps its transparency.
- Any other kind (a BMP, an AVIF) is saved as JPG, or as PNG when it is a drawing.
Choosing the quality
For photographs, 70 to 80% is where the weight falls fastest and the eye sees least. Below 50%, blocks and halos appear around edges. Slide across the picture to see both versions at the same place, then decide.
A picture that is already light may have nothing left to give: when the result would be heavier, the original is kept as it is, and the page says so.
Why lighter pictures matter
Pictures are most of what a page weighs, and the largest one usually decides how fast the page appears. Half the weight is half the wait on a phone. The size in pixels counts as much as the quality: how we build fast sites shows both.
