Where the weight goes
A camera saves a JPEG at 95% quality or more, which keeps detail no screen will show. Written again at 70 to 80%, the same photo often weighs a third as much, and the difference is hard to find without the two side by side.
That comparison is on the page: slide across the picture. Skies and skin show a low setting first, as bands and blotches; busy textures hide it longest.
The other lever: the width
A photo from a phone is 4,000 pixels wide; a page shows it at 1,200. Setting the width removes nine pixels in ten before the quality is even touched. Do both for a picture meant for the web.
For a lighter file still, JPG to WebP saves another quarter at the same look.
