How a PNG is made lighter
A PNG can hold sixteen million colours a pixel, and most pictures use a few thousand. Reduced to the 256 that matter most and written with a palette, the same picture often fits in half the weight or less, and on a screenshot, an interface or a drawing the eye rarely finds the difference.
Smooth gradients are where it shows. “Smooth gradients” mixes neighbouring colours to hide the steps, and the file pays for it in weight; turn it off for the lightest file. Where smoothing would make a picture heavier than it was, it is saved in steps and the row says so. Fewer colours, 64 or 16, suit icons and diagrams and make the file smaller still.
What is kept
- Transparency, including the partly transparent pixels of a soft edge.
- The size in pixels, unless you set a width.
- The format: the result is a PNG that opens wherever the original did.
A photograph saved as PNG is better served by another format: PNG to JPG, or PNG to WebP to keep transparency.
