Fetching the words…

Strong · 78 bits of entropy

About 3,503 years to guess at a trillion tries a second. Longer than anyone has ever lived.

Between the words

Words from the EFF’s long word list, by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, under CC BY 3.0 US.

Free · No ads · No sign-up Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent or stored.

Words drawn at random

Each word is picked independently from the EFF’s long list of 7,776 words, using your browser’s cryptographic random generator. These are random words, not a sentence you choose yourself.

The word list is in English in both versions of this tool. It comes from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, under the CC BY 3.0 US licence.

Length does the work

Each word adds about 12.9 bits of entropy. Six words carry about 77.5 bits. Adding another word increases the number of possible passphrases by a factor of 7,776.

Hyphens, dots, underscores or spaces make the words easier to read. Capital letters and an optional digit can help meet a site’s requirements; the random words provide the strength.

Only in this page

Your passphrase is never sent to a server, saved in browser storage or placed in the address. Switching between password and passphrase keeps your choices for this visit. Reloading or leaving the generator discards the secrets.

Use a different secret for each account and keep it in a password manager. For a string of letters, digits and symbols, switch to Password above the result.
