What the five parameters say
- utm_source: where the visit comes from, such as
facebook, newsletterorflyer. - utm_medium: the kind of channel, such as
email,paid-social,cpcorprint. - utm_campaign: the campaign’s name, such as
fall-sale-2026. - utm_term: the paid keyword, for search ads.
- utm_content: which link or version was clicked, to compare two ads or two buttons.
Analytics tools, Google Analytics among them, read these from the address and group the visits by them. The first three are the ones every campaign link should carry.
Keep the values consistent
Analytics count Facebook, facebook and FB as three different sources. The builder writes everything in lowercase and turns spaces into hyphens unless you ask otherwise, so a campaign’s links stay on one line of the report. Settle on a short list of sources and mediums, and reuse it.
Where to use it
On links you control outside your own site: newsletters, social posts, ads, printed codes. Never on links between pages of your own site, where they replace the visit’s real source in your reports.
Printing the link? Paste it into the QR code generator.
